Something has been on my heart for a while and I hope I can make it a reality some day. I work primarily on the technology side of the multifamily industry.  Therefore, when I visit an apartment community it is in a support, training, or implementation capacity. In my personal life, I have a passion for the homeless or those struggling to get by day to day. I am sure each of us has a charitable organization that shoots arrows right through our hearts.  Around the Thanksgiving Holidays, the Dallas Apartment Association goes all out for the annual toy drive.  Several apartment communities decorate boxes for residents to donate toys for needy children.  Angel trees pop up all over town.

What if that spirit could continue throughout the year? What if each month the apartment community spotlighted a different charity? Maybe have a donation box in the office for non-monetary items? Provided a donation link on prospect and resident portals?  The feelings of goodwill from employees and residents alike.  My desire is to work with apartment communities one at a time, in a simple and uncomplicated manor, to nurture and grow a “Pay it Forward” culture.  Think about the impact this could have!

Here are a few ideas:

  • Each month donate an item to complete a homeless package, travel size toothpaste, shampoo, socks, t-shirt, etc.
  • Non-perishable food item each month for the local food bank.
  • and spotlight a cause for donations.
  • January – Spotlight health charities such as the YMCA Or American Diabetes Association.
  • February – Spotlight American Heart Association. Sponsor a jump rope contest.
  • March – Spotlight an animal charity such as the SPCA. Have a petting zoo.
  • April – Spotlight a disaster relief organization such as the Red Cross. Have topics on Renter’s Insurance. Or sponsor a community garden.
  • May – Spotlight Veterans Organizations. Donation box for items for homeless Vets.
  • June – Spotlight children’s charities. Food Banks and programs that feed children in the summer.
  • July – Spotlight organizations that help people pay utility bills in the summer. Provide tips on conserving energy.
  • August – Sponsor back to school charities. Donation box for school supplies.
  • September – Sponsor a local school. Help a school by allowing them to host a car wash at the property.
  • October – Spotlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Create a walking team. Send out locations for health screening and health fairs. Wear pink or have pink decorations.
  • November – Movember – spotlight men’s health programs. Send out locations for health screening and health fairs. Pass out stick on mustaches.
  • December – Toy Drive, Angel Tree, Canned Food Drive, Coat Drive, Blanket Drive

There are so many opportunities to pay it forward. Get off the bench.
